Origins
This breed is recognized as the most ancient breed in the world. It is said to have originated in China over 2,000 hears ago. But others say it originated in the Arctic Circle and then migrated to Mongolia, Siberia and China. Originally, the chow chow was used for hunting, pulling sleds or herding. Nowadays, it is mostly kept as a companion dog.

Appearance
The chow appears in five colors: red, cinnamon, cream, black and blue. Its coat is very dense, either smooth or rough. The fur is particularly thick around the neck making the chow look like a lion.

The average height of an adult chow is17 to 20 inches ( 43 cm to 51 cm) at the withers. The weight is 45-70 pounds (20-32 kg). It is sturdily built, with a broad skull and small, triangular ears, rounded at the tip and with unusual blue-black/purple tongue. The muzzle is broad near the eyes and narrows toward a black nose. The chest is broad and deep. The tail, carried over its back, is thickly covered with hair. It has straight hind legs what makes walking rather stilted.

Temperament
The chow is distinguished by its keen intelligence and independent spirit. Well-mannered and willful. Although considered to be a one-person dog, its is loyal to entire family. Any displays of timidity and aggression are rather uncharacteristic. However, in its approach to strangers, it can be reserved and off putting. In threat circumstances, it shows aggressive protection of its home and family.

Not very active, however enjoys being taken for a walk. Its obedience depends mostly on a dog`s individuality. Most chow chow dogs get on well with other pets, e.g. cats.
